Discussion of Agenda Items

Review of organization mission statement

The sentence "One of the main goals of the society is to promote undergraduate participation in research at UTD." has been added to the mission statement.
  • Question from Venky: Will the focus on research scare students off?
    • We hope not. We might need to stress that this is not essential but the society is great way to let people know what is available in terms of research.
  • How do other people draw in students?
    • SGDA uses LAN parties but those seem to fit the gaming group more
    • IEEE had about 100 people attend there first meeting of the year. They plan to have an industry speaker at every meeting. They run about 15 minutes of slides to talk about the organization.
    • Social activities.
  • Are there any scheduling problems with honors courses?
    • It seems that CS 3345 and CS 4348 will need a change.
    • Create a desirable schedule for honors classes. Ask for input from current sophomores, juniors, seniors. Send the updated schedule to Venky.

    • Ask Dr. Ntafos to forward an announcement to faculty to ask for their participation.

  1. Discuss plans on the table (set tentative dates?)
    1. Research fair
    2. C++ crash course * 10/17 2pm-5pm
    3. (Bi-)Monthly meetings
      1. Pizza
      2. Faculty member give a talk + demo
  2. Set quantitative goals for success
    1. Start a plan for achieving these goals
  3. Brainstorm 'fun' activities that have nothing to do with school, or are at least different.
  4. List enrollement of Fall 2008 Honors classes
  5. Discuss possible cooperation with TSPE (and invite Juan Rivera to our next meeting)
